The Death Penalty T-Poster campaign, Not the Death Penalty. Not in Massachusetts, is a project initiated and funded by the American Friends Service Committee with support from friends in the advertising industry. The goal of the project is to engage a broad segment of the public in a "One to One" dialogue on the death penalty and to inform those who want to work against the death penalties of the many organizations who focus on this issue. Anti-death penalty advocates hear politicians say, "The overwhelming majority of the voting population is in favor of the death penalty. It is undemocratic not to give them what they want." In Massachusetts, where the governor has promised to put the death penalty question on the ballot, we were left with an organizational challenge. Many of us ride in public transportation every day. The advertising lining the ceilings of the trains or busses is a way to engage riders in a "One to One" dialogue on the death penalty. Guided by photographer Lou Jones, AFSC initiated this public advertising campaign. The campaign rests on portraits of individuals, local celebrities, community leaders, religious leaders and youth combined with individual, twenty-word quotes that engage the reader in a dialogue on the death penalty. The reader is encouraged to call an 800 number to get involved. In order to fund the project we have started a, Give this poster a ride! campaign. Each poster costs $25.00 a month to mount in the T.
