Connecticut Network to Abolish the Death Penalty

The Connecticut Network to Abolish the Death Penalty (CNADP) has been working to abolish the death penalty in Connecticut since 1986. We stand strongly opposed to the death penalty as it is poor public policy. The death penalty does not deter crime, it is not cost efficient, it kills the mentally ill, it is economically and racially biased, it kills the innocent, and it does not provide closure to families - it is simply revenge, not justice.

Statement from the Connecticut Network to Abolish the Death Penalty
The Execution of Saddam Hussein

The Connecticut Network to Abolish the Death Penalty condemns the recent execution of Saddam Hussein. We are fully mindful of the heinous nature of his crimes and we condemn them fully. Our sympathy lies with the families of the many victims of his brutal regime. But we firmly believe that capital punishment is not the appropriate response: no state has the right to kill one of its citizens, no matter what their crime. Many major world figures---including the leaders of France, Germany and Italy, and Pope Benedict XVI---have condemned his execution.

The killing of Saddam Hussein will not further the cause of peace in Iraq. It will be seen by many in Iraq as vengeance rather than justice, and it will set back the development of a fair and impartial judiciary which is fundamental to a democratic government.

It is ironic that the United States has been pushing for the execution of Saddam Hussein, since support for the death penalty in America is declining. Here in Connecticut and across the U.S. the number of death sentences is declining, and more people now support life without parole over capital punishment. Rather than clinging to a failed public policy at home and urging it on other nations, we should join the vast majority of democratic states in the world and abolish the death penalty.

I Dream a World
The 2007 I DREAM A WORLD arts competition is underway. Through this contest, high school students (ages 13-20) are invited to express their thoughts on peace, justice and capital punishment. The contest is inspired by the vision of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and the Langston Hughes poem, "I Dream A World," and is a joint venture of CNADP and the American Friends Service Committee. There are four categories: 2D and 3D artwork, electronic/mixed media, written word and/or performance, and photography and the deadline is March 1, 2007. For more information, including an entry form, go to http://www.afsc.org/ct/idream.htm For assistance go here.

National League of Women Voters officially adopts a policy against the death penalty
The League of Women Voters of Connecticut believes that capital punishment should not be a sentencing option for murder or any other crime. A sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of release is punishment that ensures public safety without raising the many complex problems associated with the death penalty.
