   Quick Facts:

  • There is currently no death penalty in Maine.
  • The death penalty was abolished in Maine in 1887 as a result of a public hanging where the man suffered in a poorly tied hangman's noose.
  • The most recent attempt to reintroduce the death penalty was rejected by wide margins in both the House and Senate in May, 1999.
  • Maine law provides for life without the possibilty of parole for first-degree murder.
